About Us
Who We Are

The Order of Preachers was established 800 years ago by St. Dominic “for preaching and the salvation of souls.” Following the Rule of St. Augustine and the Constitutions of the Order of Preachers, Dominican friars commit themselves to study, prayer, and preaching in order to be effective instruments of Jesus Christ’s saving mission. The Order of Preachers is made up of regional provinces throughout the world that carry out the work of evangelization in collaboration with the bishops of the local churches where they serve.

Our Province

The Order came to Nigeria in 1951. The Order of Preachers (Dominican Friars) entity in Nigeria and Ghana is known as the Province of St. Joseph the Worker. The Dominican Province of St. Joseph the Worker (Nigeria & Ghana) comprises over 250 friars. Blessed with an abundance of vocations, we strive to live out our Dominican and Thomistic traditions as we face the challenges of modern-day West Africa. St. Thomas Aquinas Priory, Ibadan is our study house, founded to fulfil this missions and charism.

Our Way of Life

Every Dominican is a contemplative preacher. Stephen of Salanhac, O.P., once described the Dominican friar as “a canon by profession, a monk in austerity of his life, and an apostle by his office.”

Our Mission

Our mission is Preaching for the salvation of souls. We have been called to proclaim the Gospel to every corner of the world, so that every soul may come to know and love Jesus Christ.

The Vows

Poverty, obedience and chastity make us men who try to consecrate ourselves for the adventure of the Kingdom of God.

The Four Pillars

The Dominican Spirituality is most times described in terms of our four pillars: prayer, study, community and ministry. More

Our preaching

The Dominican notion of preaching goes beyond homily or formal catechesis, because the foundation of preaching the word is preaching by example.

This fits perfectly with the early Dominican motto, verbo et exemplo (by word and example).

Our Formation

The Dominicans are professed religious men and women who are dedicated to preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world.

The novitiate programme is a one year programme, during which the novice is expected to deepen his knowledge of the religious and the Dominican Spirituality. Upon the completion of the novitiate program which is one year, the novice makes profession of simple vow. He leaves the novitiate and then joins the student community, known as the ‘studentate.’

At the studentate the student brother begins his primary apostolate which is study. St. Dominic included study as an essential part of his plan for the Order.

He, who himself always carried the Gospel of St. Matthew and the Epistles of Saint Paul, sent the brothers to the major cities so that they might study, preach, establish priories and centres of learning, and thereby better serve the mission of the Church.

In the life of a Dominican student there is a serene balance of prayer, study and healthy relaxation.

There is a variety too in the subjects studied, and encouragement is regularly given to guide the student through the programme of studies. Over time, the mind of the studious friar is enlightened, his will is strengthened, and his oratorical skills are sharpened. The goal of the studentate is to mold the student into the image and charism of St. Dominic.
