The Chapter Providence (2001) clearly distinguish between three groups of the Family;
A. In the first group, though distinct among themselves, those whose bound with the Order is directly with the Master of the Order through their profession of vows or promises.
1. The friars,
2. The cloistered nuns and
3. Members of the lay and priestly fraternities (previously known as third order).
B. The second group, includes the distinct institutes of consecrated life aggregated to the Order participating in its mission through their congregational charisms, although they do not have a direct juridical bond to the master of the order.
1. Sisters of Dominican Congregations of apostolic Life and
2. Members of certain secular institutes, by various titles, are part of the Order of preachers.
C. In the third group, there are new initiatives
1. The Associations attached mentioned in the LCO 152-153 and Appendix n. 4 ( e.g. the confraternities of the Rosary),
2. The new groups that can be recognized by the provincial Chapters of friars or by the prior provincials with their councils, or by the general prioresses of the congregations of Sisters,
3. The members of the different groups of the Dominican Youth Movement and
4. Many other persons that, without any type of formal commitment participate and collaborated in various ways in the mission of the Order.
The long history of our Order shows that there are many ways of living the charism and the mission of preaching that are complementary among themselves and consequently, increase the vigor and riches of the common mission.
This diversity may be wells of blessings if we learn to complement each other, living in fidelity to one’s own vocation and sharing the particular contribution that each branch is called to offer.
